STETSON SKYDIVE CLUB WELCOMES NEW STUDENTS WITH DEMO JUMP AT CONVOCATION! Alex Bittner, co-founder of the Stetson Skydive Club, took flight late Saturday afternoon for the jump he had been working to make happen for two months. The plan was to take off from Skydive DeLand about a mile and a half away from Stetson University, get out at a low altitude over the campus, and land his Stetson green parachute in Rinker Field right before the incoming class entered the Edmund Center for convocation. Alex and co-founder Jessica Spreng had hopes of increasing skydiving awareness on campus since the newly implemented Club Sports program would allow for a thriving skydiving club to start if enough students expressed interest.
DeLand is the skydiving mecca of the world. Home to more skydiving manufacturing businesses than any other single place on Earth, DeLand also keeps planes flying year-round at Skydive DeLand. The demo jump into Rinker Field went as planned, ok maybe a little late, but as planned and was a huge success. Dean Stuart Michelson walked proudly onto the field, school gown and all, and shook Alex' hand to congratulate him on his achievement. Afterward during the convocation ceremony, President Windy Libby explained to the incoming class of students that they too could take to the skies for the best thrill this world can provide while they spend the next four years here at Stetson.
